How To Measure Sq Footage Of Countertops

Measuring the square footage of countertops is a crucial step in planning and budgeting for a kitchen or bathroom renovation. Accurate measurements ensure you order the correct amount of materials and avoid costly mistakes. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you measure your countertops accurately:

Step 1: Gather Tools

Before starting, gather the necessary tools: a measuring tape, a pencil or pen, a notepad, and a calculator.

Step 2: Check for Backsplash

Determine if your countertops will have a backsplash. If so, decide whether to include the backsplash in your measurements. It is generally recommended to include the backsplash for a more accurate representation of the total countertop area.

Step 3: Measure Overall Dimensions

Measure the length and width of each countertop section. For L-shaped or U-shaped countertops, measure each section separately. Measure from the outer edge of the countertop to the inner edge where it meets the wall or another countertop.

Step 4: Account for Cutouts

If your countertops have any cutouts for sinks, cooktops, or other appliances, subtract their areas from the overall dimensions. Measure the length and width of each cutout and calculate its square footage. For circular cutouts, use the formula for the area of a circle: πr², where r is the radius of the cutout.

Step 5: Add for Overhang

If your countertops will have an overhang, add its area to the overall dimensions. Measure the length and depth of the overhang and calculate its square footage. Then, multiply this value by the number of overhangs you have.

Step 6: Calculate Square Footage

Once you have all the measurements, multiply the length and width of each countertop section to get its square footage. Then, add the square footage of all sections together. If you included the backsplash, add its square footage as well. If you subtracted any cutout areas, subtract their square footage from the total.

Step 7: Add Extra for Waste

To account for cuts and waste during installation, it is recommended to add an additional 10% to the total square footage. This extra footage will ensure you have enough material to complete the project without running short.

Example Calculation:

Let's say you have an L-shaped countertop with the following dimensions:

  • Section A: Length = 8 ft, Width = 3 ft
  • Section B: Length = 6 ft, Width = 2.5 ft
  • Sink Cutout: Length = 2 ft, Width = 1 ft
  • Overhang: Length = 1 ft, Depth = 0.5 ft

Step-by-Step Calculation:

Section A Square Footage: 8 ft x 3 ft = 24 sq ft

Section B Square Footage: 6 ft x 2.5 ft = 15 sq ft

Cutout Square Footage: 2 ft x 1 ft = 2 sq ft

Overhang Square Footage: 1 ft x 0.5 ft = 0.5 sq ft

Total Square Footage: (24 + 15 - 2 + 0.5) sq ft = 37.5 sq ft

Waste Allowance: 37.5 sq ft x 0.10 = 3.75 sq ft

Final Square Footage: 37.5 sq ft + 3.75 sq ft = 41.25 sq ft

Therefore, the total square footage of the countertop, including the overhang and waste allowance, is 41.25 square feet.
