How To Make A Cement Countertop
Cement countertops are a beautiful and durable addition to any kitchen or bathroom. They are relatively easy to make, and they can be customized to any size or shape. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make your own cement countertop.
Materials
- 1 bag (94 pounds) of Portland cement
- 2 cubic feet of sand
- 1 cubic foot of gravel
- Water
- Countertop forms
- Concrete sealer
- Tools:
- Mixing tub
- Trowel
- Edger
- Concrete grinder
- Polishing pads
Instructions
1. Prepare the countertop forms. The forms should be made of plywood or melamine, and they should be slightly larger than the desired size of the countertop. The forms should be coated with a release agent to prevent the concrete from sticking.
2. Mix the concrete. In a large mixing tub, combine the cement, sand, and gravel. Add water slowly, mixing until the concrete is the consistency of thick peanut butter. You may need to add more water or dry ingredients to achieve the desired consistency.
3. Pour the concrete into the forms. Pour the concrete into the forms, filling them to the top. Use a trowel to smooth the surface of the concrete.
4. Let the concrete cure. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before removing the forms. Once the forms are removed, the concrete will need to continue curing for several weeks before it is fully set.
5. Grind the concrete. Once the concrete is fully set, use a concrete grinder to grind the surface until it is smooth and even. Be sure to wear a dust mask when grinding concrete.
6. Polish the concrete. After the concrete is ground, use polishing pads to polish the surface until it has the desired sheen. You can use different grits of polishing pads to achieve different levels of sheen.
7. Seal the concrete. Once the concrete is polished, apply a concrete sealer to protect it from stains and wear.
Your cement countertop is now complete! Enjoy your new beautiful and durable countertop.
