How to Put Formica on a Countertop

Formica is a durable, low-maintenance material that is often used for countertops. It is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, so you can find one that matches your kitchen décor. Installing Formica is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Formica countertop
  • Plywood or MDF backer board
  • Construction adhesive
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk
  • Utility knife
  • Router
  • Jigsaw

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Countertop

If you are replacing an existing countertop, you will need to remove it first. Once the old countertop is removed, clean the surface of the cabinets with a degreaser. This will help the construction adhesive to adhere properly.

2. Cut the Formica

Measure the countertop and cut the Formica to size using a utility knife and straight edge. Be sure to score the Formica lightly with the utility knife before cutting it. This will help to prevent the Formica from chipping.

3. Apply the Adhesive

Apply a generous bead of construction adhesive to the back of the Formica. Use a caulk gun to apply the adhesive evenly.

4. Install the Formica

Carefully place the Formica on the countertop and press it down firmly. Use a rolling pin or a heavy object to apply pressure to the Formica. This will help to ensure that the Formica adheres properly.

5. Trim the Excess Formica

Use a utility knife to trim any excess Formica around the edges of the countertop. Be careful not to cut into the countertop.

6. Caulk the Edges

Apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the countertop. This will help to seal the edges and prevent water from getting underneath the Formica.

7. Let the Formica Cure

Allow the Formica to cure for at least 24 hours before using it. This will give the adhesive time to dry and set properly.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable cutting the Formica yourself, you can have it cut at a home improvement store.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when working with construction adhesive.
  • If you are installing Formica on a curved countertop, you will need to use a router to create a template.
  • Once the Formica is installed, you can protect it by applying a sealant.
