DIY Concrete Countertops: Feather Finish

Concrete countertops have become increasingly popular due to their durability, affordability, and aesthetic appeal. A feather finish is a popular choice for concrete countertops, as it creates a smooth, polished look with a slight texture. Creating a feather finish on your concrete countertops is a relatively simple process that can be completed with a few basic tools and materials.

Materials you'll need:

Concrete mix
Water
Concrete bonder
Concrete sealer
Bucket
Mixing paddle
Trowel
Edger
Feather broom
Grinder and sanding pads (optional)

Steps:

Prepare the concrete mix. In a large bucket, combine the concrete mix with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Stir until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Add the concrete bonder and stir again.
Pour the concrete. Pour the concrete mix onto the countertop formwork. Use a trowel to spread the concrete evenly and fill in any gaps. Tap the formwork lightly to release any air bubbles.
Level the concrete. Use an edger to level the concrete and create a smooth surface. Wipe away any excess concrete with a damp sponge.
Wait 24 hours. Allow the concrete to cure for 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.
Feather the concrete. Using a feather broom, gently brush the surface of the concrete in a circular motion. This will create a slight texture that will help the concrete bond better to the sealer.
Grind and sand (optional). If desired, you can grind and sand the concrete to create a smoother finish. Use a grinder with a sanding pad to remove any high spots or imperfections.
Seal the concrete. Apply a concrete sealer to the surface of the countertop to protect it from stains and damage. Allow the sealer to dry completely before using the countertop.
