How To Install Laminate Countertops

Installing laminate countertops is a great way to give your kitchen or bathroom a new look without breaking the bank. Laminate is a durable and affordable material that is available in a wide variety of colors and finishes. It is also easy to install, making it a great option for do-it-yourselfers.

Tools and Materials

  • Laminate sheets
  • Contact cement
  • Caulk
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Utility knife
  • Straight edge
  • T-molding
  • Miter saw
  • Caulking gun

Instructions

1. Prepare the Subtop

The first step is to prepare the subtop. This is the surface that the laminate will be applied to. The subtop should be clean, dry, and smooth. If the subtop is not level, it will need to be leveled before you can install the laminate.

2. Measure and Cut the Laminate

Once the subtop is prepared, you can measure and cut the laminate. Use a measuring tape to measure the length and width of the subtop. Add 1 inch to each measurement to allow for overhang. Cut the laminate to size using a utility knife and straight edge.

3. Apply the Contact Cement

Apply a thin layer of contact cement to the back of the laminate and to the subtop. Allow the contact cement to dry for 10-15 minutes before proceeding.

4. Install the Laminate

Once the contact cement is dry, carefully align the laminate with the subtop and press it into place. Use a rolling pin or a heavy object to apply pressure to the laminate and ensure that it is securely bonded to the subtop.

5. Trim the Excess Laminate

Once the laminate is installed, trim any excess material around the edges using a utility knife. Be careful not to cut into the subtop.

6. Install the T-Molding

T-molding is used to cover the seams between the laminate sheets. Cut the T-molding to length using a miter saw. Apply a thin layer of caulk to the back of the T-molding and press it into place. Use a caulking gun to apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the T-molding.

7. Clean Up

Once the T-molding is installed, remove any excess caulk and clean up the work area.
